Recover Laboratory

Recover Laboratory is an art company led by three multi-talented young women from Finland. The company combines contemporary circus and contemporary art to create immersive experiences. We ask you to stop and experience art fully, in your own pace and your own way. The delightfully bizarre, even absurd, immersive shows often take the form of a labyrinth – and sometimes they don’t. As an audience member, you are invited to step inside, find your way, make your choices, and create your own experience.

Our main discipline and the core of Recover Laboratory is a multisensory and immersive art labyrinth. It is an interdisciplinary production, born in the steamy crossroads of contemporary art and contemporary circus. The site-specific labyrinth is done annually in new spaces, always as a new individual production, often under the ground. It is designed to draw the viewer’s thoughts into the deep unknown. It is a personal experience where every viewer can submerge themselves in their own desired way. An absurd surrealism hangs over the artwork.

In addition to the labyrinth we produce performances for stages. "Recover Laboratory: On Stage" is a wide selection of multi-disciplinary performances with convenient set-up, suitable for many different performance spaces and events. These artworks can be performed on traditional stages or similar spaces, some both indoors and outdoors. We also offer an event kickstarter concept One Night Only, an immersive wonderland for kids and families and produce commisioned and customized artworks.

We build frameworks where we – with the audience – can explore the world and being in the world. The reason behind our artworks is honesty; connecting with people in the freedom provided by art. Anything is possible in our spaces; just like everything is possible in an ordinary day. Also, any space is possible: we have produced artworks in wastewater treatment plants, tunnels, vast halls and small closets.

The core team of Recover Laboratory consists of Miradonna Sirkka, Sofi Häkkinen and Inna Huttunen, who design all the productions and artworks.

Miradonna Sirkka, the director, is a circus artist who created Recover Laboratory in 2014, when she wanted to bring circus out of the black box. Miradonna is ashamed of everything and nothing at the same time. She is a rough thinker who questions and re-invents her field constantly. Her main circus discipline is the plastic tube.

Sofi Häkkinen, the artistic director, is a visual artist, who turns any material into anything. She is shy and hides in dark corners. She is an unconditional creator, whose glance penetrates, and who survives in very difficult environments with her neverending ideas. A Master of Arts, who sees and remembers things that others don’t and uses them where nobody expects it.

Inna Huttunen, the producer, is an experience designer who has some kind of superpowers in her bubbly core. She produces and designs massive multisensory mayhems, like a 15 h long immersive theatre and escape game show set in a speeding train through Finland, or labyrinths under the ground - and has even a degree specifically for that.

In addition to this core trio, we have a wide network of professionals in Finland and abroad. We work with circus, art, theatre, music, coding, and other medias. The team is always reformed to satisfy each new and unique concept, and the needs of the performance space.

Your experience with us can be gentle or harsh, bizarre or detached, challenging or soft and light; it can go as far as the you want. Let’s go together.
